Paul, I almost addressed this in the post but thought better of it for the time being. To "warm the cockles of your heart" refers to a feeling of deep-seated contentment and would most likely, these days, be replaced with something along the lines of "a warm and fuzzy feeling". The cockles of your heart are more metaphorical than physical but could be derived from the bastarization of "cochleae", as in the Latin "cochleae cordis" which referes to the chambers of the heart. Cheers!
