Here's a tip for anyone who might be embarking on a road trip and doesn't want to be leafing through the atlas of maps while you're underway. Download the MotionX-GPS Drive app to your iPhone or iPad. It's incredible. We've come to like ours so much, we've named her Penelope (the planner) and she's guided us through cities and the country without a hitch. MotionX also allows you to use the app for free for 30 days (which just happens to be the length of our trip), which really lets you get to know all of her features.
/MotionX will talk to you and tell you "where to go", she'll list out her instructions for those who still rely upon the written word, and she'll show you exactly where you are and where you're going on an active 3D map at any point in time. She'll tell you how much longer you have before reaching your destination, in miles and estimated time. She'll tell you where the nearest gas station, coffee shop, and/or hotel is. She'll correct the driving instructions if you take a wrong turn, and she'll even tell you your altitude, longitude and latitude. Big brother may not be watching but Penelope/MotionX is, and we've come to rely on her to keep us on the right highways and byways.
